At least 90 people have died and hundreds more injured in a huge truck bombing on Wednesday that caused panic in the diplomatic district of Kabul and was not claimed in the evening.
"90 people were killed and 400 were injured, including many women and children," the government information center said. The Minister of Health stressed that the balance sheet could become even more burdensome.
Among the dead are eleven Jav Bukkake Afghan security guards from the US Embassy, a US official in Washington told AFP.
Eleven American contractors working for the huge diplomatic and military complex that Washington has in Afghanistan are among the wounded, an official in Kabul told AFP.
Several hours after the attack, the rescuers continued to disengage bodies half burnt or disfigured, while desperate inhabitants sought their relatives.
"They went to work, like every day, and now they are missing," said a young Afghan who was looking for an uncle and cousins. "I searched them in three hospitals, in vain."
The attack, committed at the beginning of the month of Ramadan fasting in this ultra-protected zone sheltering numerous barricaded embassies behind high walls, was conducted at the morning rush hour.
"The explosion was caused by a water tank that contained more than one and a half tons of explosives and dug a crater 7 meters deep," a western source told AFP in Kabul.
The truck bomb was operated by a suicide bomber around 08:30 local time (0400 GMT), according to the Ministry of the Interior.
The attack was not claimed in the evening and its precise target was still not clearly established.
The Taliban, which announced in late April the launch of their "spring offensive," said on Twitter "not be involved in the Kabul bombing and strongly condemn it." The Taliban rarely claim attacks in which the number of civilian casualties is very heavy.
Afghan intelligence, however, blamed the Haqqani network, an allied armed Taliban group responsible for numerous attacks on foreign and local forces in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, the organization Islamic State (EI), the author of several bloody attacks in Kabul in recent months, had not spoken on Wednesday night.
Among the victims include an Afghan guard from the German embassy and an Afghan-based BBC driver and a journalist from the Afghan TV station Tolo. Two employees of the same embassy and four BBC journalists were also injured.
The deflagration was so strong that it shook much of the city, blowing many doors and windows and sowing panic.
Dozens of destroyed cars lay abandoned on the site, where security forces and relief workers quickly deployed.
The government has called the population to donate blood in hospitals.

Several embassies reported material damage, including the embassy of France, where they are described as "important", and those of Germany, Japan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, India and Bulgaria.
Washington denounced an "atrocious" attack. "The fact that this attack took place during the month of Ramadan underscores its barbaric dimension," a White House official told AFP.
"Such attacks do not change our determination to support the Afghan government in its efforts to stabilize the country," German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said.
Germany has postponed the scheduled departure on Wednesday of a charter flight from Afghans expelled from the country. The employees of the embassy in Kabul "have more important to do just after this attack than to prepare these logistical measures", underlined the German minister of the Interior Thomas de Maizière.
Resolute Support, the NATO mission in the country, hailed "the vigilance and courage of the Afghan security forces that prevented the vehicle trapped" from further entering the diplomatic zone.
President Ashraf Ghani denounced a "war crime".
"We are for peace but those who kill us during the holy month of Ramadan do not deserve to be called to make peace, they must be destroyed," said Afghan chief executive Abdullah Abdullah .
Amnesty International said the attack showed that "the conflict in Afghanistan is not weakening but is spreading dangerously, in a way that should alarm the international community."
Pope Francis denounced an attack "abject".
In Paris, the Eiffel Tower will be symbolically extinguished Wednesday evening to pay tribute to the victims.
